In the past, the grimacing face emoji used to cause a huge amount of confusion given its distinct similarity with the grinning face emoji. Obviously that’s not ideal – not being able to tell the difference between a grinning face and a grimacing one! – but developers have tried to address this in recent editions. Today, the grimacing face shows circular eyes and an elongated, oval mouth bearing both rows of teeth as well as individual teeth. It can be used to show moderate dislike, or as a “mea culpa!” to admit you have done something in error. Perhaps a little bizarrely, Snapchat has adopted this emoji to denote that you and your contact have the same Snapchat “best friend”.
